Hurricanes halt Bullets playoff run

JAMESVILLE — All playoff losses hurt, but Jamesville coach Richie Ange and his squad felt quite a sting after their 38-8 loss to Northampton West on Friday in the first round of the NCHSAA 1-A playoffs.
The third seeded Bullets (8-4) took an early 2-0 lead over the 14th seeded Hurricanes (5-6) late in the first quarter when a Justin Barr punt pinned down Northampton West at its own 3-yard-line. Two plays later Hurricanes QB Antonio Manley was called for an in the grass penalty in the end zone to give the Bullets two points and the ball back.
Jamesville’s defense looked sharp throughout the first quarter and midway through the second, as it stifled the Hurricanes’ spread offense.
Northampton adjusted, and dedicated itself to the run. The Hurricanes shifted to an I formation and stampeded the Bullets’ defense with lead plays for running backs Marvin Rawls, Devin Williams and Desmine Moody. Manley also effectively scrambled and ran for two TDs, while Rawls, Moody and Michael Peebles each ran for one.
The Bullets had no answer for the Hurricanes trio of backs as Northampton rushed for 408 yards and five touchdowns on 43 attempts.
Ange said the Hurricanes’ ground game took its toll on his team.
The Bullets were also hurting on offense. Northampton stacked the line of scrimmage and brought its secondary way up. A majority of the time, the Hurricanes didn’t have a defender more than six yards off the line of scrimmage, daring the Bullets to throw the ball.
Ange obliged, but Jamesville quarterback Regis Bell could only connect on seven of its 22 passes for 163 yards. The Bullets had a few key dropped passes, while Bell wasn’t accurate on all his throws.

Northside’s upset bid falls short

There were 13 touchdowns, over 700 rushing yards, no punts and not much defense at Nolan Respess Stadium Friday night.
After a slow start by No. 7 Roanoke and multiple lead changes, the Redskins advanced in the state playoffs by defeating a pesky Northside squad, 52-46.
Trailing 46-44 late in the fourth quarter, Savion Hudson recorded the decisive score with a 2-yard touchdown run with 3:56 left to play.
On 4th-and-12 on the ensuing drive, Hudson broke up a pass from Northside quarterback William Rushton, ending No. 10 Northside’s upset bid.
Northside (3-9) took the 46-44 lead on a 3-yard touchdown run from Rushton.
Rushton scored three rushing touchdowns and had 108 yards on 12 carries.
Hudson and the Roanoke (8-4) offense countered with 407 offensive yards however, scoring on seven of its nine possessions.
Northside, which lost to Roanoke 44-13 in the regular season, set the tone early as running back Anthony Martin scored from 56 yards out on its opening play from scrimmage.
Boyd said that the offensive line was the key to Northside’s success on the ground.
The Redskins will play No. 2 Williamston, which is lost to in overtime last week, in the second round of the playoffs next Friday.
