Maxine Boomer Simmons, 87, of 5149 Piney Woods Road, Fairfield died Tuesday morning, November 13, 2007, at her home.
Born in Pitt County, April 28, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Jones Wellington and Bessie Cason Boomer. She was married to Joseph Leslie Simmons, Jr. who preceded her in death on June 5, 1992. She was a member of the All Saints Episcopal Church in Fairfield, a former Hyde County Mother of the Year, past Worthy Matron of Fairfield Chapter # 247 of Order of the Eastern Star, was recipient of the Governor’s Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service presented by Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. in 1995, a silver member of the Mattamuskeet Foundation, served as registrar for many years in the Fairfield precinct with Hyde County Board of Elections, was presented the Hall of Fame Award by Hyde County Waterfowl Association in 2001, served for many years as Fairfield Librarian with the BHM Library System and was a member of Fairfield Senior Book Club.
Funeral Services will be held at the family plot in Fairfield Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday. Pastor James S. Jones and Steve Bryan will officiate.
Surviving are a son, Joseph Leslie Simmons III and wife, Audrey of Fairfield; three daughters, Joanne Simmons Best of the home, Betty Simmons Mann and husband, Richard and Donna Simmons Nifong both of Fairfield; ten grandchildren, Elaine Hammel and husband, Mickey, Pam Cahoon and husband, Guire, Joey Simmons IV and wife, Kathy, Donald Glenn Simmons and wife, Kim, Lee Mann and wife, Shelly, Darlene Parent and husband, Kent, Carroll Nifong, Jr. and wife, Kim, Tom Mann and wife, Sue, Dr. Wiley Nifong and wife, Daphne and David Mann; 25 great-grandchildren, Brandy C. Pugh and husband, Darrell, Crystal Gibbs and husband, Toby, Daniel Cahoon and wife, Jamie, Donald Glenn Simmons II and wife, Lacey, Shawna Martin and husband, Troy, Demock Mann, Averi Simmons, Anna Simmons, Misty Nifong and fiance, Charlie Clark, Kendal Dobra and husband, Dinu, Brittany Blizzard and husband, Mike, Tessa Parent, Taron Parent, Karen Parent, Jay Simmons V, Tyler Mann, Thomas Mann II, Alex Payne, Caroline Nifong, Taylor Mann, Timothy Nifong, Richard Mann IV, Jesse Parent, Wyatt Mann and BoLee Mann; six great-great-grandchildren, Danielle Pugh, Carl Wayne Pugh, Kylie Simmons, Noelle Gibbs, Leah Cahoon and Landon Cahoon.
Mrs. Simmons was also preceded in death by a grandson, James Earl Best in 2005 and a great-grandchild, Lorton Dale Modlin in 1983.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorials be directed to Fairfield Volunteer Fire Department, Fairfield, NC 27826 or Community Health Care and Hospice, P. O. Box 130, Engelhard, NC 27824.
The family will receive friends at the home and arrangements are by Bryan Funeral Service in Swan Quarter.
