Mr. James Thomas Asby Sr., 87, a former resident of 113 Village Circle in Washington, died Saturday, November 24, 2007 at Britthaven Nursing Home of Washington.
A graveside funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Pamlico Memorial Gardens and officiated by Pastor Phillip Jethro. Mr. Asby’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Mr. Asby was born in Beaufort County on Dec. 9, 1919, son of the late Charlie Thomas Asby Sr. and the late Maggie Tetterton Asby. He married the former Frances Elizabeth Apple on Aug. 10, 1940, who preceded him in death on Feb. 14, 2003. Mr. Asby was an auto mechanic who worked at Smith Mills Pontiac at the time of his retirement.
Survivors include a daughter: Sue Ipock and her husband Elton of Washington; five sons: George “Boston” Asby and his wife Shirley and Terry “Mac” Asby and his wife Argie both of Washington, Billy Asby and his wife Anita of Plymouth, James “J.T.” Asby and his wife Juanita and Glenn “Stuff” Asby both of Washington; four sisters: Mrs. Herbert “Louise” Ipock of Bridgeton, N.C., Ms. Harriette Hedgepeth of Washington, Mrs. Lloyd “Booty” Buck of Vanceboro, N.C. and Mrs. Lane “Tippie” Alligood of Washington; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Mr. Asby was preceded in death by a sister: Kathleen Alligood and two brothers: George Asby and Charlie Asby Jr.
The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. today at the home of Mr. Asby’s son, Terry “Mac” Asby located at 287 Homeplace Road, Washington and from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Monday at Paul Funeral Home of Washington.
In lieu of flowers the family kindly asks that memorial contributions be made to Beaufort County Chapter Relay for Life, C/O Lisa Alligood, 7581 Broad Creek Road, Washington, NC 27889.
