Mr. William J. “Willie Joe” Styons, 84, of Plymouth died Wednesday, November 28, 2007 at Washington County Hospital, Plymouth.
Born January 11, 1923 in Martin County, he was the son of the late Lewis S. and Mary Hardison Styons, Sr. and was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Jett Styons; brothers, Nixon T. Styons and Phillip W. Styons; son-in-law, Jimmy Kolikas; and granddaughter, Gail Kolikas. Mr. Styons was a retired self-employed painter and member of Plymouth Church of Christ. He was a US Army Airborne veteran of World War II, with service in the “Rescue At Dawn” story of the Prisoners of War in the Philippines. He was the first father in Washington County drafted during World War II. His many awards and commendations included three bronze stars and The Purple Heart. He loved gardening and was an avid hunter and member of Morrattock Hunting Club.
His family includes his daughters, Reba L. Kolikas of Byhalia, Mississippi, J. Lynette Garrett and husband, Michael of Beaufort, N.C. and Teresa S. Boutin and husband, Urbain of Roper, N.C.; sons, Glenn J. Styons and wife, Deanie of Hampstead, Maryland and Jerry N. Styons and wife, Judith of Newark, Delaware; sisters, Margaret S. Lynn, Melrose S. Waters, Helen S. Miller and Pat S. Lynn all of Plymouth, N.C.; brothers, Lewis S. Styons, Jr. and D. Marion Styons of Plymouth, N.C. and Raymond E. Styons of Roper, N.C.; fifteen grandchildren, twenty-six great grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, December 1, 2007 at 11 a.m. in the Plymouth Church of Christ with Bob Moulden officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens with military honors. Family will receive friends on Friday, November 30, 2007 from 7-9 p.m. at Plymouth Church of Christ and other times at the residence of his sister, Patsy J. Lynn. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Plymouth Church of Christ Building Fund. Arrangements are by Maitland Funeral Home, Creswell.
