Mrs. Mary Hassell Barber Reid, 72, of Plymouth and formerly of 1009 Bridges Drive, High Point, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007, at the home of her daughter, Sharon Schaut in Mattawan, Mich.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Walker Funeral Home-Horner Chapel, Plymouth. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Donald Davenport, Sterling Davenport, Benny Harrison, Lloyd Jones Jr., Anson Knowles, Edison Knowles and Jimmy Spruill, all classmates from the class of 1954 at Roper High School.
Mrs. Reid was born in Washington County on Aug. 24, 1935. She was the only child of George Spencer and Martha Elizabeth Hassell. She was a graduate of Roper High School class of 1954. On Oct. 2, 1954, she married Douglas Ward Barber, who preceded her in death Dec. 22, 1962. She worked 33 years as a certified nursing assistant in three states: 19 years in Virginia Beach, Va., three years in Petoskey, Mich., and 11 years at the Presbyterian Home of High Point. She was a member of Roper Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Pam Barber of Amarillo, Texas and Sharon Barber Schaut of Mattawan, Mich.; two sons, Earl Barber of Murrieta, Calif., and Elvis Barber of Amarillo, Texas; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four brothers, Jack Hassell of Miami, Fla., and Gene Hassell, Calvin Hassell and Paul Hassell, all of High Point.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Obed Hassell, James Hassell, Bill Hassell and Vernon Hassell.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7-9 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home, Horner Chapel, Plymouth.
