VIRGINIA BEACH — Robert J. “Tommy” Thompson, 86, of the 1100 block of Sherry Ave., passed away on Sunday, December 16, 2007 at his home. Born in Spring Valley, NY, Mr. Thompson was the son of the late Harry and Natalie Stysly Thompson. He was retired from the US Navy with twenty-three years of service and Odom, Stubbs and Ogletree, Inc. with twenty years of service. He was also a member of the Fleet Reserve, Branch 60 and VFW Post 4809, both in Norfolk. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Eagle Haven Men’s Golf Association.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Powell Thompson; four children, Carol A. Cox and husband Norman of Virginia Beach, VA, Robert J. Thompson Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA, William J. Thompson, Sr. and wife Susan of Chesapeake, VA and Terry L. Eby and husband Dan of Chesapeake, VA; ten grandchildren, Kristin, Michelle, Robin, Robert III, Aaron, Tiffany, William, Jr., Kelly, Richard, and Christopher; five great grandchildren; and two sisters, May Thompson and Elaine Serven. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mildred Capowski and a brother, Harry Thompson.
A funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel with Chaplain Dick Dinges officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Mr. Thompson will then be transferred to Paul Funeral Home, Belhaven, NC for a service at 11 a.m. Thursday with Rev. Linda Rowe officiating. The sons and grandsons of Mr. Thompson will serve as active pallbearers. Mr. Ed Craft will serve as an honorary pallbearer. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Burial will follow in Winsteadville Cemetery, Belhaven, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of ones choice.
