Four boys teams and four girls teams will be looking to claim the championship trophies during the 28th annual Washington Daily News’ Holiday Invitational.
The two-day tournament, which tips off today and concludes Friday, will be held at Northside High School.
Admission to the tournament is $5 per day.
Northside will be joined by Terra Ceia, Pamlico and East Carteret in the boys field, while the girls field is comprised of Northside, Terra Ceia, Pamlico and Cape Hatteras.
The Pamlico Hurricanes and Cape Hatteras Hurricanes will tip off the girls tournament today at 3 p.m., followed by the Northside Panthers and Terra Ceia Knights game at 4:30 p.m.
The girls consolation game will be played Friday at 3 p.m. and the championship game will begin at 4:30 p.m.
Terra Ceia coach Rod Cantrell, whose team is off to a 6-8 start, is familiar with the Panthers (0-8). The Knights beat Northside in action earlier this year.
While the Knights don’t have a winning record, Cantrell said the team’s schedule has been brutal. Terra Ceia, led by All-State guard Jordan Cantrell, has fallen to such top-rated teams as perennial powerhouse Oak Hill, Word of God, Wayne Country Day, Hobgood and Grammercy.
Roger Klaassen will lead his Terra Ceia Knights into battle against the Pamlico Hurricanes at 6 p.m. to start the boys tournament.
Northside, 1-6 on the year, will square off with the East Carteret Mariners at 7:30 p.m. Northside’s lone win of the year came against the Mariners.
The boys consolation game will start at 6 p.m. Friday, followed by the boys championship game at 7:30 p.m.
Championship trophies and Most Valuable Player plaques will be awarded at the conclusion of the tournament.
