Mrs. Esther Swain Rhodes, 87 of Columbia died Saturday, December 22, 2007 at Lynchburg General Hospital, Lynchburg, Virginia.
Born July 19,1920 in Tyrrell County she was the daughter of the late Charles and Dora Swain and was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence S. Rhodes; sister, Vera Baker; brothers, Grady Swain, Joe Swain and David Swain. She retired as Director, Tyrrell County School Food Services and voluteered in various Senior Center programs. She was a founding member of Sandy Acres Free Will Baptist Church and taught Sunday School over 60 years.
Her family includes her daughters, Joan R. Melcher and husband Leon of Pamplin, Va. and Joyce R. Phelps and husband Eddie of Smithfield, Va.; sister, Katie Reynolds of Jamesville, N.C.; grandchildren, Eric Melcher and wife Judy of Chesapeake, Va., Susanne Melcher of Clemmons, N.C., Gregory Melcher of Jacksonville, Fla.. and Sonya Albores and husband Nelson of Chesapeake, Va.; great-grandchildren, Alec Melcher, Ryan Melcher, Christina Albores and Jayden Albores.
Funeral service will be held Friday, December 28, 2007 at 11:00 am in the Sandy Acres Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Phil Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Azalea Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends on Thursday, December 27, 2007 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Sandy Acres Free Will Baptist Church. Arrangements are by Maitland Funeral Home, Creswell.
