Mr. William Hawkins “Billy” Dawson, Jr., age 83, a resident of Washington, died Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at Beaufort County Hospital.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, January 12, 2008 from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home, Washington, conducted by Dr. James Hagwood and the Rev. Keith Hudson. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington.
The following will serve as active pallbearers: Bobby Andrews, Jimmy Hardee, L.M. Odom, Tim Etheridge, Jimmy Cherry, Sam Grist, and Hugh David Grist. Deacons of the Riverview Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Mr. Dawson was born in Washington on June 11, 1924. He was the son of the late William H. Dawson, Sr. and Roxie Anna Wagoner Dawson. Mr. Dawson was a 1942 graduate of Washington High School. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. Mr. Dawson was a tobacconist working as a mental calculator for several tobacco markets. He served as Sales Supervisor for the Washington Tobacco Market for several years. Later, Mr. Dawson owned and operated W. H. Dawson, Jr. Accounting. He was a member, trustee and deacon of the Riverview Baptist Church. Mr. Dawson was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class and Church choir.
On September 19, 1946, Mr. Dawson married the former Becky Paramore, who preceded him in death, June 6, 1989. On February 3, 1990, Mr. Dawson married Juanita Henries Cherry, who survives.
Surviving with his wife are two sons, William H. “Bill” Dawson III and wife, Camilla, Lee Dawson and wife, Rita all of Washington; a daughter, Gail Dawson Pinkham and husband, Tim of Washington; a stepson, Jimmy Cherry and Beverly of Washington; a stepdaughter, Lucy Cherry Grist and husband, the Rev. Samuel Latham Grist III of Washington; four grandchildren, Todd Dawson and wife, Sharon, Wendy Dawson, Jennifer Bonner and husband, Joseph, Rebecca Pinkham; seven stepgrandchildren, Erin Cherry Daw, Hugh David Grist, Lydia Elizabeth Grist, Victoria Jayne Cherry, Hugh James Cherry, Jr., Kristen Cherry and Sam’ L Grist IV, and greatgrandson, Christopher Lee Bonner.
In addition to his parents and his first wife, Mr. Dawson was preceded in death by four sisters, Wilma D. Morgan, Mildred D. Ferguson, Betty D. Smith and Frances D. Andrews.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Paul Funeral Home, Washington and other times at the home.
