Mr. Alton Otis Gurganus Sr., 77, formerly of Roper, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, at Sandhills Regional Medical Center in Hamlet.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Walker Funeral Home-Horner Chapel in Plymouth with the Rev. Bob Moulden officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens in Plymouth.
Mr. Gurganus was born in Martin County on Jan. 11, 1931. He was the son of the late Cecil Garland and Eva Ayers Gurganus. He served in the Army from 1949 to 1952. He was married to Edna McLamb Gurganus, who preceded him in death in 1984. He later married Alice Price Gurganus, who survives. He retired from SeaBoard Coastline/CSX Railroad in 1990 after 32 years of service. He was a Mason and belonged to Perseverance Lodge in Plymouth.
Survivors include two daughters, Louise G. Loflin of Spencer and Dolores G. Miller of Port Wentworth, Ga.; three sons, Alton Gurganus Jr. of Clayton, Okla., Cecil T. Gurganus of Norwood and Joey B. Gurganus of Mountain Home, Idaho; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Ruth G. Worsham of Belton, Texas, Lucy G. Spruill of Roper, Barbara G. Biggs of Edenton, Syble G. Blount of Manteo and Hazel G. Baum of Roper.
The family will receive friends today from 7-9 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home-Horner Chapel in Plymouth, and other times at the home of his daughter, Hazel Baum, 11625 N.C. Highway 32 North, Roper.
