Mr. James Willis Hodges, age 93, a former resident of 695 East Main Street, Belhaven died Sunday, February 17, 2008 at Britthaven Nursing Home of Washington.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. today, February 19, 2008 at the First Christian Church of Belhaven officiated by Rev. Steve Green and Mike Isbell. Burial will follow at Belhaven Community Cemetery. Mike Saleeby, Reeves Smith, Doug Barnes, Terry Sparrow, Georgie Baker, Durwood Laughinghouse, Mike Calfee and Doug Clark will serve as pallbearers.
Mr. Hodges was born in Hyde County on January 13, 1915 son of the late James Byron Hodges and the late Mary Elizabeth Swindell Hodges. He was a graduate of the former Swan Quarter High School and served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married the former Sibyl Josephine Askew on February 18, 1938 who survives. He was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church of Belhaven, where he served as elder and deacon. Mr. Hodges was a past charter member of the Belhaven Lions Club, he served on the Town of Belhaven Board for twenty-six years, was a retired Volunteer Fireman of the Belhaven Volunteer Fire Department having served for thirty-three years, was a member of the Belhaven Masonic Lodge 509 AF&AM and a member of the American Legion Post 249 for sixty-one years.
Surviving along with Mr. Hodges’ wife, Sibyl is a daughter: Mary Jo Allen and her husband, Bonner of Pantego; a daughter-in-law: Elizabeth Hodges of Belhaven; three grandchildren: Anthony and Michael Allen of Pantego and James “Brandon” Hodges and his wife, Shannon of Mebane; two great grandchildren: “Kayla” Leslie Hodges and “Jayce” Bryon Hodges; two cousins and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Hodges was preceded in death by a son: James Byron Hodges on May 23, 2007 and a grandson: Raymond Bruce Allen on January 16, 2008.

The family will receive friends at the home of Bonner and Mary Jo Allen located at 743 NC 99 North, Pantego, NC.
