Ruamie Carroll Squires

WAKE FOREST — Born in Wake Forest, NC on March 10, 1915, Ruamie was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Reston Memory Squires. She attended Mars Hill Junior College and Meredith College, receiving the Bachelor of Arts degree from Meredith in 1934. She received the Master of Arts in English from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1958. In 1945 and 1946, she served in the American Red Cross Recreation Department in Florida.
She was a career teacher, chiefly of Senior English in various public schools in North Carolina until her retirement in 1975. She was dedicated to enriching the lives of her students through the teaching of English literature. Places in which she taught in NC include Pinnacle, Raleigh, Fair Bluff, Washington, Wake Forest and Franklinton.
Miss Squires was a life-long member of the Wake Forest Baptist Church, where she served as a deacon.
A book of her selected poems was published in 1998 entitled “Where Tomorrow Was.”
In 2005, she was honored with the establishment of The Ruamie Carroll Squires and Hildreth Squires Barnes Scholarship at Meredith, honoring the significant impacts these two sisters’ made on the lives of their students.
She was predeceased in death by her father, Reston Memory Squires; her mother, Ethel Carroll Squires; sisters, Evelyn L. Howell and Hildreth S. Barnes; and brother, Rodney M. Squires. Her surviving family includes her sister, Dr. Julia S. Witten, Littleton, CO; her brother, Cedric P. Squires, Kansas City, MO; sixteen nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, February 20, 2008 in the Auditorium of Springmoor Life Care Retirement Community in Raleigh. Burial will follow at 4 o’clock in the Wake Forest Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Ruamie Carroll Squires and Hildreth Squires Barnes Scholarship at Meredith College.
Friends may visit with the family briefly following the service at Springmoor Life Care Retirement Community.
