Cahoon rips first collegiate homer

Kat Cahoon blasted her first college home run for the Mount Olive Trojans, coming in a 7-6 win over Belmont Abbey. Cahoon, a former start at Columbia, ripped her home run in the seventh inning to tie the game and force extra innings. The Mount Olive (6-2) outfielder is hitting .364 this season. The Trojans play Tuesday at Wingate.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Meredith Knox, a third baseman for the Anderson Trojans, knocked in three runs to help lead Anderson to a 15-7 victory over Claflin. Anderson (4-6) plays a doubleheader Tuesday at Mars Hill.
Mika Gurganus, a former standout at Williamston, is playing shortstop at Barton College. She is hitting .250 on the young season. The Bulldogs play host to Wheeling Jesuit today.
Franchesa Pittman is hitting .238 on the young season for the N.C. Central Eagles. The former Plymouth star, who is the catcher for the Eagles, has a double among her five hits to go with a pair or RBI. The Eagles (0-9) play a doubleheader against N.C. A&T on Tuesday.
Nicole Jordan, a former standout at Jamesville, is playing second base for the Pitt Community Bulldogs, who are off to a 2-2 start. Pitt plays in the Easton Classic (Chipola College) in Florida Feb. 29 to March 1.
Former Northside standout Donieca Ebron and former Williamston standout Dominique Mills are playing softball at Fayetteville State. Both players are outfielders for the Broncos, who play March 1 against Concord University.
Former Williamston star Tara Stancill and former Mattamuskeet standout Brittney Nixon are playing softball at Louisburg College. Stancill plays third base and Nixon splits between catching and outfield. The Hurricanes (5-5) play in a tournament March 7-9 in Panama City, Fla.
Former Northside standout Candice Sasnett is playing softball at Florence-Darlington Technical College. Sasnett, who plays shortstop, and the Stingers play a doubleheader against Truett-McConnell College on Thursday.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Anthony Williams is off to a hot start at Mount Olive College. The former Williamston standout is hitting .362 for the Trojans (13-1). Williams, who plays second base, has 17 hits, scored 14 runs, stolen four bases and has driven in four runs. Williams has a .969 fielding percentage. Mount Olive plays a doubleheader at Chowan on Tuesday.
A pair of former Williamston High School standouts, outfielder J.J. House and pitcher Styron Barfield, are playing at Elizabeth City State University. House went 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI in a recent 13-9 loss to Chowan. Barfield struggled in a 17-3 loss, allowing 13 runs (9 earned) on six hits with four walks in two innings. The Vikings play a doubleheader Wednesday at home against Coker.
Former Plymouth standout Brant West is pitching at Davidson College this season. The Wildcats play host to Virginia Tech on Wednesday.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Calvin Daniels is averaging 13.4 points per game for the Louisburg Hurricanes. The former Washington Pam Pack star is in his first season with the Hurricanes.
Danny Wilson played in 31 games, starting 29 of them, for the Longwood Lancers. The former Northside High School standout averaged 3.3 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. Wilson hit 44.6 percent from the floor and 68.6 percent at the foul line. The Lancers went 9-22 this season.
Washington native Joe Davis played with the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Davis appeared in nine games for the Mariners and averaged 1.3 points and 1.9 rebounds. The Mariners went 12-13 this year.
Hunter Johnson started seven games and played in all 24 for the Meredith College Avenging Angels. The former Pungo star averaged 4.3 points and 3.6 rebounds. Johnson hit 48.4 percent from the floor and 62.5 percent at the foul line. Meredith went 6-18 this year.
Whitney Stokes has played in 24 games for the Elizabeth City Vikings this season. The former Plymouth star, a three-time Daily News’ Player of the Year, is averaging 2.1 points and 1.6 rebounds for the Vikings. Elizabeth City (12-15) plays Virginia Union today.
Stephanie Holton has appeared in 17 games for the Shenandoah University basketball team this year. The freshman, a former star at Columbia High School, is averaging 1.9 points and 0.7 rebounds per game. The Hornets (11-14) play at No. 4 Ferrum on TuesdayDeborah Satterthwaite has appeared in 10 games for the Chowan Hawks this season. The former Northside standout is averaging 1.4 points and 0.9 rebounds per game. Chowan is 9-18 this year.
PRO BASKETBALL
Elton Coffield is averaging 22.9 points for the BSW Sixers. The former Williamston standout is leading his team’s division in the German basketball league.
Joseph Barber, a former standout at Terra Ceia, poured in 43 points for the Derby Trailblazers in a 90-84 loss to the Bristol Academy Flyers Feb. 16 in England basketball. Derby plays the Manchester Magic on March 1.
