JAMESVILLE — In a stop and start game Monday night, primarily due to a total of 40 fouls called between the two teams, Jamesville’s girls’ basketball team, the No. 2 seed from the Tideland conference, hung on to defeat Southside, the No. 3 seed from the Atlantic conference, 44-38.
The game started off abysmally for both squads, and the two were only able to combine for a total of 26 points in the entire first half.
Jamesville had a 6-4 lead after the first quarter as both teams shot under 10 percent from the floor.
The terrible shooting continued in the second, and Southside (3-16) and Jamesville (10-11) traded the lead back and forth before entering the locker rooms tied at 13.
Things picked up in the third quarter, and the Lady Bullets Elizabeth Ange dropped in the first five points on a long jumper and a 3-pointer from the top of the key.
Tamisha Creadle of the Seahawks put back a teammate’s miss and Kayla Haywood got a layup to go and added a free throw after being fouled on the shot to tie the game at 18.
Another 3-pointer for Jamesville, this one from Corey Ange, gave the lead back to the Lady Bullets and started a 7-3 run over the next two minutes that made the score 25-21 in Jamesville’s favor.
Southside’s pressure defense and more terrible shooting from the Lady Bullets kept Jamesville scoreless for the last three minutes of the third quarter.
In the meantime, the Lady Seahawks scratched out eight points over the remainder of the quarter, capped by Jasmine Pender’s layup as the buzzer sounded, to take a 29-25 lead into the fourth.
The two squads traded baskets yet again over the first three minutes of the fourth quarter and Southside was able to maintain the lead of four until Kara Perry, who had a decent game in the middle for Jamesville, sank a couple shots form the charity stripe to cut Southside’s lead to 33-31.
Over the next two minutes, all of the scoring came from the free throw line as both teams were in the bonus.
With just under three minutes left, Creadle fouled out and Chamicka Anderson of Jamesville got the subsequent free throws to go to tie up the game at 34. Less than a minute before, Seahawk players Mandi Harding and Haywood also fouled out.
Ange got a couple of steals that led to break-away layups to give Jamesville a four-point lead, 38-34.
Pender of Southside returned the favor before Ange did it a third time to regain the four point lead for the Lady Bullets with only 35 seconds remaining.
The rest of the game was played primarily from the free throw line, and Southside wasn’t able to get closer than four before losing ultimately by six.
Jamesville will play at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Weldon.
