GREENVILLE — With Washington clinging to a one-goal lead and just over five minutes remaining in the game, D.H. Conley had a golden opportunity to tie it.
However, Pam Pack goalie Ashley Crompton stuffed a penalty kick and the Pam Pack soccer team held on for a 2-1 win in Monday’s Coastal Conference opener.
Washington, which got goals from Hayley Stowe and Beth Batchelor, remained perfect on the season with the victory, improving to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Stowe gave the Pam Pack an early 1-0 lead less than seven minutes into the game. After Blaine Prescott booted the ball on a corner kick, Stowe leaped between two defenders in front of the goal and headed the ball into the back of the net.
It stayed that way for 27 minutes until the Vikings were able to tie the game.
The Vikings turned up the offensive pressure in the second half, but Crompton turned away all their shots.
Batchelor provided the winning margin midway through the second half. Prescott shot the ball to a sprinting Batchelor, who collected the ball and zipped it past the goal and into the right side of the net for a 2-1 lead.
Washington plays at South Central at 7 p.m. Wednesday, then returns home for a Thursday contest against Edenton.
