Edith Cuthrell Davis, 89, of Engelhard, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven. She had more recently been a resident of Cross Creek Health Care Center, Swan Quarter.
Born in the Mt. Pleasant Community of Hyde County, September 23, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Edward Tooley and Bethanie Virginia Pugh Cuthrell. She graduated from the former Engelhard High School in 1935, attended King’s Business College and took a business course in 1957. She was married to Elmo Adkins Davis, who preceded her in death on October 2, 1992. She lived in Roanoke Rapids for many years and worked as a weaver in the Rosemary Textile Mill. She was a member of Emera Chapter #113, Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of Rosemary Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, where she taught Sunday School in the Junior Department for 17 years and also taught for a time in the Senior Adult Ladies Class. She was active in the Lottie Moon Missionary Circle, serving as secretary and being in the programs. Following her husband’s death, she moved back to her native Hyde County.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the family plot in Amity United Methodist Church Cemetery. Steve Bryan and Scott Sukeforth will officiate.
Surviving are a sister, Inez C. Spencer of Engelhard; three nephews, Sam Cuthrell and wife Lessie of Engelhard; Bill Farrow of Engelhard and George Ransom and wife Pam of Chesapeake, Va. Seven great nieces and nephews, several great-great-grand nieces and nephews and a special friend, Maclyn Gibbs.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Maggie C. Sadler and Luella C. Sadler; two brothers, Henry D. Cuthrell and John E. Cuthrell.
The family will receive friends at Bryan Funeral Service in Swan Quarter on Saturday from 12 noon to 1 p.m.
