Martha O’Neal Banner went home to be with her Lord and Savior on March 20, 2008 at home in Greensboro, N.C. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, March 22 at Fairfield Cemetery, Fairfield, N.C. in Hyde County. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, March 26 at Westside Chapel, 5000 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro.
Martha was born in Hyde County, N.C. on June 2, 1917 to Carlos and Wilhelmina Mann O’Neal. Growing up in the hamlet of Fairfield in the early 1900’s gave her all advantages of country life: learning first hand the value of family, friends and church, as well as hard work, generosity and a steady, energetic approach of life. She carried these lessons throughout her life.
She moved to Greensboro in 1934 to attend Woman’s College and met Jack L. Banner while they were both employed with the Dixie Fire Insurance Co. They were married on February 5, 1941, just after the start of World War II.
In 1955, she became a charter member of Trinity Church in Greensboro where she served on the missions committee for many years. She gave tirelessly to her family, friends and church, her generous nature giving much encouragement and hope to those who crossed her path.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Jack; three children: Lynn and wife, Mary Sue; Katherine and husband, Glenn; and Ruffin and wife, Tina; brother, Emory; and four grandchildren: Lindley Webb, Matt Banner, Cates Banner and Keelan Banner. We will always love and miss Martha very much. Our beloved wife, mother, sister, friend and MaMommy.
Memorial gifts may be made to Martha’s church, Westside Chapel, 5000 West Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27410 and to Hospice of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405.
Arrangements are by Bryan Funeral Service in Swan Quarter, NC.
