Mr. Wesley Ray Hiatt, age 94, formerly of Chocowinity, died Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at the Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, California. Mr. Hiatt had been a resident of Palm Springs since February of 2007.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 27, 2008 at Union Chapel Free Will Baptist and will be conducted by Rev. Henry Horne. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. at Peachtree Baptist Church Cemetery in Spring Hope, North Carolina. Snody Carrow, Rusty Carrow, Donnie Edwards, Mason Proctor, Kenny Edwards and Jack Edwards will serve as pallbearers. Mr. Isaac Edwards will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
Mr. Hiatt was born in Surry County on April 15, 1913 to the late William Benton and Laura Hartie Lawrence Hiatt. Mr. Hiatt was a retired farmer and employee of Southern Furniture Market in High Point. He was a former member of Union Chapel Free Will Baptist Church and a current member of Palm Springs Baptist Church, California. On October 9, 1943 he was married to Lillian Lorene Edwards who preceded him in death on October 8, 1994.
Surviving are a daughter, Judith Hiatt Henson of New Tazwell, Tennessee and a son, Gary Edwards Hiatt of San Francisco and Palm Springs, California; Alice Caudle of High Point and Effie Griffith of Ohio; two brothers; Dillard Hiatt of Greensboro and Garfield Hiatt of Florida; two grandchildren, Angie Henson Newland of Nashville, Tennessee and Ashley Henson Simerl of Jefferson City, Tennessee and one great grandson, Caleb Thomas Simerl. Mr. Hiatt was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington.
