Emily Carter Warren Jones, age 88, died on Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008 in Ashland, Virginia where she had resided for several years during a period of declining heath. She was a native of Washington, North Carolina, the only daughter of her deceased parents, Lindsay Carter Warren and Emily Harris Warren, also natives of Washington. Emily Carter, as she was known by family and friends, was educated in the public schools of Washington and graduated in 1940 from St. Mary’s College, Raleigh, NC. Thereafter, she was employed in the nation’s capital with the Reconstruction Finance Corporation until the end of World War II. In March, 1946 she married Dudley M. Jones, Jr. of Lynchburg, Virginia, who had served in the U.S. Army in France as a Captain in a field artillery unit. One child was born to this marriage in June, 1948, a daughter, Diana Warren Jones. In 1951, the family moved to Wilson, NC where Mr. Jones was employed with Wilson Tobacco Company. Upon her husband’s premature death in 1971, Emily Carter continued to reside in Wilson where she enjoyed the company of many friends. She was a charter member of The Literary Guild, a book club, and an active member of The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in The State of North Carolina. She was also a faithful parishioner of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church. Not to be overlooked was her vocal loyalty to the Democratic Party, continuing a family tradition.
In death, Emily Carter is survived by her daughter, Diana J. Carter and husband, Dr. Hill Carter, Jr. of Ashland, Virginia; four grandchildren: Hill Carter, III and wife, Tina of Warwick, Rhode Island; Dudley Carter Sullivan and husband, Michael of Port Washington, New York; Lindsay Carter Gerstmyer and her husband, Noah of Stevensville, Maryland; Mary Chandler Carter of Ashland, Virginia; and two great-grandchildren: Carter and Maureen Sullivan. In addition, she is survived by two brothers, Lindsay C. Warren, Jr. and wife, Mary Todd Warren of Goldsboro, North Carolina; and Charles F. Warren and wife, Alma W. Warren of Chevy Chase, Maryland; plus three nieces Adrienne Warren Northington of Goldsboro, Emily Warren McNair of Raleigh and Grace Warren Johnston of Greensboro.
A Memorial Service will be held for Mrs. Jones in Wilson, NC at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 28, 2008. Interment will take place 3 p.m. on Friday at Washington’s Oakdale Cemetery at the Warren family plot. Memorial gifts may be made to St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 202 North Goldsboro Street, Wilson, North Carolina 27893 or a charitable organization of one’s choice.
