Mr. Walter Hilliard Witt, 83, of Creswell, died Monday, March 24, 2008, at the Veterans Regional Medical Center, Durham.
Born September 3, 1924 in Lake City, Florida, he was the son of the late Walter Purvis and Jessie Woods Witt and was preceded in death by his brother, Monroe Witt. Mr. Witt was the former owner of Midway Motor Company of South Norfolk until 1974. He and his family moved to Creswell where he worked for First Colony Farms and later retired from Weyerhaeuser Corporation. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and member of Roper Baptist Church.
His family includes his wife of 60 years, Nancy Ingle Witt of Creswell, N.C.; daughter, Patricia W. Place and friend David Selby of Greenville, N.C.; sons, William R. Witt and wife Brenda of Fredericksburg, Va., David B. Witt and friend Joe Kaiser of Charlotte, N.C. and James W. Witt and wife Melody of Norfolk, Va.; sister, Kathleen W. Richardson of Jacksonville, FL.; brothers, Gerald Witt and Jack Witt of Lake City, FL.; nephew, Rodney Brown and wife Patti of Newport, N.C.; grandchildren, Angie Witt Anderson, Rebecca Witt Clark, Jennifer Witt Bigler, Jacob Witt, Brian Witt, Amanda Place Brown, Shelley Place and Bernie Newton; great-grandchildren, Joshua Anderson, Brandon Witt, Alyssa Witt, Isaac Witt, Ezekiel Witt, Hunter Clark, Makayla Clark, Trew Bigler, Morgan Bigler and Antonio Witt.
Memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at 2 p.m. in the Roper Baptist Church with Rev. Howard Simpson officiating. Family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. Memorial donations may be made to Roper Baptist Church. Arrangements are by Maitland Funeral Home, Creswell.
