Mrs. Mattie L. Smallwood Barber of 1132 Pierce St., Washington, died Saturday, April 5, 2008, at Britthaven of Washington.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Davis Chapel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. C.B. Gray officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Washington.
Mrs. Barber was born in Beaufort County on July 17, 1918. She was the daughter of the late Charlie and Odelia Roberson Smallwood. She attended the Beaufort County Schools. She was married to Alexander “Bro” Barber, who preceded her in death. She was a member of Davis Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the Mother’s Board.
Survivors include two sisters, Geneva Buck of Washington, and Louise Blount of Queens, N.Y.;
She was preceded in death by her siblings: Henerietta Smallwood, Fannie Smallwood, Magnolia Smallwood, Kathleen Smallwood, Annie Bell Smallwood Evans, Odelia “Baby” Smallwood Smith, David Smallwood, Levi Smallwood, Charlie Smallwood and George H. Smallwood.
The family will receive friends today from 2-8 p.m. at Leon Randolph Funeral Home, 208 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Washington, and other times at the home of her nephew, James Smallwood, 1033 Pennsylvania Ave., Washington.
