Alton Leo Cayton, 75, died Friday, April 11, 2008 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Rev. Bruce Cayton and the Rev. Dr. Jack B. Sammons officiating. Fire department honors will be conducted by the Buncombe County Firefighters Honor Guard. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Park.
Mr. Cayton was a native of Beaufort County and a son of the late Alton A. and Lizzie Edwards Cayton. He was employed by the town of Canton as the first paid fire chief. He retired from the town of Canton with 35 years of service. He attended Canton First Baptist Church and was active with the Haywood County Rescue Squad. Mr. Cayton was a United States Army veteran having served during the Korean conflict.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth “Bettye” Gunn Cayton; two sons, John Anderson “Andy” Cayton, Sr. of Savannah, Ga., and James Leonard “Lynn” Cayton of Canton; one daughter, Kimberly Ann Cayton Hartsell of Candler; six sisters, Juanita Saad of Greenville, Phoebe Mills of Chocowinity, Marie Poore of Washington, Bunnie Rowe, Judy Godley, and Gloria Jean Taylor all of Chocowinity; three brothers, John E. Cayton of Maxton, Henry W. Cayton of Greenville, and Cleon Cayton of Chocowinity; five grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by a son, Maj. Leo Bruce Cayton, Ret. United States Army. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m.
