Mr. Joshua Hubert Hardison, age 74, a resident of 194 Thoroughfare Road, Washington, went peacefully surrounded by his family on April 22, 2008.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, at the Old Ford Church of Christ, U.S. 17 N of Washington N.C., with Eddie Bowen and Levi Cichorz officiating. Burial will follow in the Hardison Family Cemetery located off Thoroughfare Road.
Craig Wynn, Nathan Pete Mizell, Ed Bolen, Jerry Boyd, Freddie Matkins, Herman Grissom, James Jimmy Byrd, and Bryan Weatherington will serve as pallbearers. His grandsons and great-grandson will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Mr. Hardison was born May 23, 1933 in Washington. His parents were the late Joshua Hubert Hardison and Vera Perry Hardison. He served his country during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Hardison was an active member of the Old Ford Church of Christ, where he served as Deacon, Chairman of the Benevolence Committee, Assistant Sunday School Superintendent, and performed many other functions for the church. He was a retired farmer who had a great admiration for the land. He continued to garden and provided fruits and vegetables to anyone who wanted them. Mr. Hardison was a very loving individual. He loved the Church, his wife, family, all children, the land, and sports. He taught his children and grandchildren how to fish, hunt, play ball, and the appreciation of the important things in life. He was the president of the Junior Bath Ruth League during 1970-1971. He never met a stranger, whether a new visitor at church, the ballpark, or any other setting.
Survivors include his wife of 53 wonderful loving years, Shirley Faye Carraway Hardison, two daughters Faye Hardison Ross and her husband, Marty, and Polly Ann Hardison Singleton and her husband, David of Washington, three sons, Joshua Hubert Hardison Jr. of Greenville; Jasper Little Hardison and his wife Lisa, and Jimmy Carraway Hardison and his wife Jennifer all of Washington. Four sisters, Mary Cratch of Washington, Mildred Hardison of Williamston, Vera Salter of Jacksonville, and Betty Woolard of Richmond, Va. Twelve grandchildren: Kim DeJong, Christopher Ross, Joshua Hardison, Mary Beth Hardison, Sarah Hardison, Jimmy Hardison, Ryan Hardison, Anna Hardison, Nicholas Hardison, Madison Singleton, Will Singleton, and Mary Helen Singleton. Three great-grandchildren: Makayla Coburn, Gracie Coburn, and Hunter Phillips.
The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Paul Funeral Home and at other times at the home, 194 Thoroughfare Road, Washington.
