Mr. Alphonza “Al” Garnett, 78, of 3028 John Small Ave., Washington, died Friday, May 2, 2008, at Beaufort County Hospital in Washington.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Gateway Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Bath, with Elder Ricky Clemmons officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Garnett was born in Beaufort County on Aug. 31, 1929. He was the son of the late William and Lottie Taylor Garnett. He was a 1949 graduate of Belhaven High School. He was an Army veteran. He did further studies in business administration at Nashville School of Business in Nashville, Tenn., and completed his education at William Penn Institute in 1956. He retired as a supply specialist with the federal government after 32 years of service. On Oct. 31, 1953, he married Thelma Winfield Garnett, who survives. He served for six years as a Grand Master of the Most Worshipful Enoch Grand Masonic Lodge in Philadelphia, Pa. He was a member of Gateway Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Bath, where he served on the trustee board.
Survivors include two sons, Eddie Garnett and Gregory Garnett, both of Pottstown, Pa.; two sisters, Louise Hopkins of Pantego, and Ludie Ebron of Washington; six brothers, Lee H. Garnett of Philadelphia, Pa., Wilbert Lee Garnett and Robert L. Garnett, both of Bath, Herbert O. Garnett of New York, Carl E. Garnett of Belhaven and James L. Garnett of Columbus, Ga.; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home.
The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service.
Arrangements are by Randolph Funeral Home, 219 N. Bonner St., Washington.
