STANLEY — Mrs. Cordula Lanier Hassell, formerly of Roper, N.C., died Saturday, May 10, 2008 at Gaston Memorial Hospital, Gastonia, N.C. She was born October 6, 1914 in Hickory, N.C., daughter of Claudia and John F. Lanier who preceded her in death. She was the wife of the late Louis Edward Hassell, Jr. of Roper.
Following graduation from Women’s College (now UNCG) she taught French and English in the Washington County Schools for more than 30 years. After retirement she was a devoted caregiver to her late sister, Alice Wagstaff. She was a member of Hebrew United Methodist Church in Roper, N.C.
Surviving are her son Tom Hassell and wife Faye of Shelby, N. C.; grandson Frank Hassell and wife Sheri of Ellicott City, MD; grandchildren Natalie, Lauren and Grace; granddaughter Traci Ford of Suffolk, VA; grandchildren Abby and Connor: sister, Ruby L. Hiss of Altoona, FL; Sidney Hassell, Sr. and Francis Hassell of Roper, N. C.; brother and sister-in-law and many nieces and nephews who were precious to her.
Funeral Services will be held at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home Chapel, Shelby, N.C. on Thursday, May 15, 2008 at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Ivan Davis officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday, May 15, 2008 prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at 2 p.m. at Catawba Memorial Park, Hickory, N.C.
