Mr. Ulysses Downing Sr. of 42 Brown St., Plymouth, died Monday, May 12, 2008, at Plumblee Nursing Center in Plymouth.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Pentecostal Temple Church of God in Christ, Plymouth, with Elder Mildren L. Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Watson Memorial Gardens in Roper.
Mr. Downing was born in Roper on Dec. 12, 1925. He was the son of the late Bertha Pittman Downing and Herbert Downing Sr. He served in the Army from 1944 to 1946. While serving during World War II, he fought in the battle of Okinawa. He had worked as a forklift driver with Georgia Pacific. He was married to Byrd Lee Downing, who survives. He was a member of Pentecostal Temple Church of God in Christ, where he served as a deacon.
Survivors include two sons, Chaplain Ulysses Downing of San Diego, Calif., and the Rev. Kenneth Downing of Rocky Mount; two daughters, Dalnesa Fishe of Durham, and Arnetta Thomas of Dacula, Ga.; two sisters, Annie Ruth Clark and Willie Mae Downing, both of Roper; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends today from 7-8 p.m. at Pentecostal Temple Church of God in Christ, Plymouth.
Arrangements are by Puckett-Purkett Funeral Service, Roper.
