PINETOWN, N.C. — William Herman “Bill” Kuiken, 90, of 5297 Free Union Church Road, died Monday, June 2, 2008 in Britthaven of Washington.
Mr. Kuiken was born May 14, 1918 in Fairlawn, NJ and was the youngest child of the late Herman D. and Maggie Nauta Kuiken. As a young man he worked on the family farm in Preakness, NJ, but was soon called to serve his country in the US Army during WWII. Serving as a cannoneer, his campaigns included Ardennes, Central Europe, Northern France and the Rhineland and was awarded the American Service Medal and European African Middle Eastern Medal. Upon returning home he soon married the former Agnes Andela on Nov. 29, 1945 and they resided in New Jersey for several years. Later they moved to West Sayville, NY where he was a member of West Sayville Christian Reformed Church and worked as a nurse’s aid in mental health at Central Islip State Hospital. After retiring they moved to Pinetown in 1985 where he was a member of Covenant United Reformed Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Anne Dykhouse, Sue Dykhouse and Nellie Brandes; six brothers, Richard, Jacob, Peter, Timothy, Gary and Andrew Kuiken.
Surviving are his wife, Agnes A. Kuiken; two daughters, Jessica VanEssendelft and husband Nelson of Miami, FL., Margaret Hubers and husband Randy of Belhaven; one son, Bill Kuiken of West Sayville, NY; seven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Covenant United Reformed Church by Rev. Calvin J. Tuininga. Burial with military honors will follow at Yeatesville Cemetery. Friends may join the family Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the church, 24599 U.S. Hwy 264 E., Pantego.
Floral tributes are welcome and will be received at the church beginning at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, or contributions in his memory may be made to the Covenant URC Building Fund, P.O. Box 9, Pantego, NC 27860.
