Alice Armstrong Smith Rose, 97, of Columbia died Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at Chowan Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit in Edenton.
Born in the Gum Neck Community of Tyrrell County on June 27, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Nora Armstrong. She was first married to Willie R. Smith and following his death she married Theodore Rose who also preceded her in death. She worked for some years at the sewing factory in Manteo, cleaned cottages, operated The Chuck Wagon in Columbia and in later years attended the elderly in their homes. She always displayed a giving spirit.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Columbia Christian Church. Randy Pierce will officiate. Burial will follow in Azalea Memorial Gardens. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Surviving are two sons, Franklin Smith and wife, Dot of Virginia Beach, Va. and Alvin Smith and wife, Jackie of Columbia; three daughters, Jeanette Deaver, Linda Smith and Connie Matthews and her husband, Richard, all of Columbia; a sister, Hettie Patrick of Elizabeth City; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Smith; two daughters, Nora Young and Shirley Holmes and several brothers and sisters.
The family extends their special thanks to the Chowan Hospital Skilled Care Unit for the special care and love given to their mother and entire family. Memorials may be directed to Chowan Hospital Skilled Care Unit, P.O. Box 629, Edenton NC 27932.
The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday evening, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and other times at the home of Connie and Richard Matthews, 3612 N. C. Highway 94, Columbia.
