Mr. Archie Lee Midgette Jr., 79, of 409 Washington St., Washington, died Friday, May 30, 2008, at home.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in The Temple of Jesus Christ United Church, Washington, with apostle Marion Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington.
Mr. Midgette was born in Beaufort County on July 27, 1928. He was the son of the late Amandia Brown Midgette and Archie Lee Midgette Sr. He attended the Beaufort County Schools. He was a Navy veteran. He was employed for many years with Eureka Mill (Moss Planing Mill) in Washington. He retired from Singer Furniture Co. in Chocowinity. On Nov. 18, 1945, he married Sarah Gray Midgette, who survives. He was the author of several books and a songwriter. Many of his awards for his novels and poetry were acknowledged by the Beaufort County Arts Council. He attended Higher Dimension Church, Washington.
Survivors include four daughters, Edna Barnes, Amanda Davila and Arlena Smaw, all of Washington, and Ramonia Peele of Portsmouth, Va.; three sons, Johnnie Midgette and Jimmy Midgette, both of Washington, and Jerry Midgette of Winterville; one brother, William Midgette of Spartanburg, S.C.; 27 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Melvin Midgette and one son, Ernest Midgette.
The family will receive friends at the home.
