Mr. William Herbert Phelps Jr., 86, of Mackeys Road, Plymouth, died Sunday, June 8, 2008, at Plumblee Nursing Home in Plymouth.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in First Baptist Church, Plymouth, with the Revs. Jim Hagwood and David Phelps officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens with military honors.
Mr. Phelps was born in Washington County on Aug. 24, 1921. He was the son of the late William Herbert Phelps Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Myers Phelps. He attended the Washington County Schools. He served in the Army as a staff sergeant during World War II. He was married to Gwendolyn Ward Phelps, who survives. He was a retired pipe fitter, mechanic and welder for Weyerhaeuser. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Plymouth.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Dian Phelps Temple of Wetumpka, Ala., and Vashti Phelps Forrest of Greensboro; two sons, William Herbert Phelps III of Denver, Colo., and David Ward Phelps of Morehead City; and five grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Plymouth, and other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to the local branch of the American Cancer Society or First Baptist Church in Plymouth.
