Elmer Hubers, 81, of 5846 Christian School Road, Pantego, died Sunday, June 15, 2008, in his home.
Mr. Hubers was born December 22, 1926 in Orange City, Iowa and was the son of the late John A. and Kate Huisman Hubers. On June 7, 1950, he married the former Jane A. Vande Brake in Sioux Center, Iowa. While living in Iowa he worked as a mechanic at Niessink and Kempers and operated Hubers’ Standard Service Station. In 1960 he moved to Pantego, N.C. and managed an Oliver dealership, worked for First Colony Farms and began a land clearing business. He gradually bought and cleared land in Ponzer and began farming in 1964 as a partner in Double H Farm. As a member of Covenant United Reformed Church, he was active in various church activities. He had a special love for Terra Ceia Christian School and the Hyde County Yokefellow Volunteers, where he ministered at the Hyde County Correctional Institution.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Albert, Bill, and Henry Hubers.
Surviving are his wife, Jane A. Hubers; three sons, Randy Hubers and wife Margaret of Belhaven, Robert “Bob” Hubers and wife Jan of Gastonia, N.C., and Shane Hubers and wife Lindsay of Belhaven; two daughters, Christal Gelderman and husband Martin of Pantego, and Candace Gelderman and husband Neil of Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada; two sisters, Helen Van Gelder of Orange City, Iowa and Nelvy Siebersma of Mesa, Ariz.; one brother, Sylvan “Bud” Hubers of DeMotte, Ind.; 22 grandchildren, Kyle Hubers and wife Swee, Shawn Hubers and wife Jessica, Reid Gelderman and wife Allison, Shannon Van Staalduinen and husband John William, Amber, April, Summer, Dylan, Jesse, Brent, Mollie and Hannah Hubers, Stacey, Kelsey, Grant, Blake, Tyler, Mandy, Chad, Katelyn, Ross and Cody Gelderman, and two great-grandchildren, Kylie Hubers and Blaine Gelderman.
Friends may join the family at the graveside service to be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Davis Cemetery followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. in Covenant United Reformed Church led by the Rev. Aldon Kuiper. Following the service in the church, friends are invited to join the family for a time of refreshments and fellowship.
