Mr. Alton Calies Davenport, known to many as “Bull” or “Bulldog,” age 72, a resident of 8552 Hwy. 264 East, Washington, NC died Thursday June 19, 2008.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday June 22, 2008 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington officiated by Jim Reid. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Sammy Robbins, Joey Taylor, Keith Taylor, Charlie Davenport, Paul Thompson and Mark Nelson will serve as pallbearers. Eddie Wells, Pete Patterson, Larry Cox, Bobby Brown, Robbie Calfee and Floyd Sutton, Jr. will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Mr. Davenport was born in Beaufort County on January 18, 1936 son of the late Charles Wesley Davenport and the late Lillian Woolard Davenport. He was a 1955 graduate of Bath High School and married the former Betty Jean Alligood on January 5, 1958 who survives. Mr. Davenport retired after working at several local grocery chains. Mr. Davenport enjoyed gardening, hunting and what he was preparing to do at the time of his death, “fishing.” He was a member of Woodard’s Pond Church of Christ.
Surviving along with his wife, Betty Jean, of the home are three sons: Michael “Mike” Calies Davenport and his wife, Debbie; Wesley “Wess” Roscoe Davenport and his wife, Bonita and Alton “Al” Lee Davenport and his wife, Jennifer all of Washington; a brother: Charlie Ray Davenport of Washington; a sister: Ladonna D. Younger of Bath; five grandchildren: Michael Paul Davenport of Greenville, Jeannie Davenport Horner and her husband, Greg of Washington, Wesley Brett Davenport of Greenville, Dylan Roscoe Davenport of Washington and Savannah Mae Davenport of Washington, some of which called him “Granddaddy” and some called him “Papa Alton” ; a step grandchild: Catrina Fisher and her husband, Allen of Chocowinity; two great grandchildren: Michael Joseph Davenport of New Mexico and Lukas Alan Horner of Washington and two step great grandchildren: Ashton Fisher and Alison Fisher both of Chocowinity; a sister-in-law: Wilma Lee Anthony of Washington and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Davenport was preceded in death along with his parents by two sisters: Edna Davenport Robbins and Wanda Davenport Taylor.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday June 21, 2008 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington and at other times at the home.
