Mavis Leggett Rodman Peele of Riverside, Washington died peacefully in her home Tuesday morning, June 24th.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter’s Episcopal church with the Reverend Kevin Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale cemetery. Pallbearers are Bill Ed Kidd, Henry Kidd, Tommy Moore, Ben Murphrey, Johnny Rodman, Hale Stephenson, Steve Stephenson, Richard Sydnor, Will Oden and Will Sydnor.
Mavis was born on June 8th, 1923 in Pitt County and grew up in Farmville. She attended Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, N.C., now known as Barton College. In the 1940s she moved to Washington. She especially enjoyed working as a secretary for Mr. Ralph Hodges at Suskin and Berry. On February 22nd, 1952, Mavis married Dr. Clark Rodman at the First Christian Church. A daughter, Ellen, was born in 1961. Soon after her marriage to Clark, Mavis joined St. Peter’s Episcopal Church where she was a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Episcopal Church Women and the Memorial Committee. But it was her work with St. Peter’s Altar Guild that was her joy. She served as Chair of the Altar Guild under the Reverend Bill Bradbury. Mavis was also a member of the Addisco Book Club for close to 50 years. And was active with the Beaufort County Arts Council and Bath Historic Commission as she loved both the arts and historical preservation.
On March 2nd, 1996 Mavis married Joseph Howell Peele, originally of Belhaven. They have shared many happy times with family and friends for the past 12 years.
Mavis was preceded in death by Dr. Clark Rodman in 1990. Also by her parents Ellen Smith and John Henry Leggett, a sister Evelyn McLawhorn Murphrey, and a brother Jennis Smith Leggett.
She is survived by her husband, Joe Peele, a daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Curtis Hathaway of Charlottesville, Virginia and their daughters Anne Clark and Brooke. Also surviving are Joe’s children Susan and Kevin Crofton of Durham, Suzie and Thomas Peele and children of Bath. Other family surviving include Lynell and Burton Sydnor of Holden Beach; Donna and Bob Murphrey of Bragaw; Ms. Diane Rodman of Greenville; Beth and Bill Oden of Washington; and many other nieces and nephews of whom she was fond.
The family will receive friends at the Riverside home of Mavis and Joe Peele. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to “Restore the Stained Glass Campaign” in memory of Mavis Leggett Rodman Peele at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, P O Box 985 in Washington, NC 27889.
