VANCEBORO — Last season, Pam Pack running back Travis Daniels accounted for nearly 65 percent of Washington’s offensive production.
But this fall, Daniels (2,290 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns in 2008) will trade in his navy blue and white Washington helmet for the gold and black headwear of UNC-Pembroke, leaving behind a huge void in the Pam Pack backfield.
The gaping hole left by the reigning Coastal 8 Conference Player of the Year may be too big for one guy to fill, so coach Sport Sawyer seeking alternate ways to get his offense rolling. Right now, he’s looking for more production from the passing game as way to pick up the slack in Daniels’ absence.
Last season, Thompson tossed for 1,072 yards and 17 touchdowns, while throwing just five interceptions. Despite decent production as a junior, the all-area quarterback expects to improve in all areas this year.
This summer, the Pam Pack is using its 7-on-7 passing leagues to develop a potent passing attack.
Another reason that Washington is high on the passing game is Tony Turnage. The junior speedster has been anointed as Daniels’ replacement in the backfield. While Daniels was a power back who preferred to run through you rather than around you, Turnage is a burner who works well in open space. That could mean a lot more swing passes and screens to the tailback.
Turnage isn’t a back who’s going to complain about getting carries. In fact, he likes the idea of a pass-friendly offense.
Washington got its second test of the preseason on Wednesday evening as they battled New Bern, West Craven and Havelock in a passing league camp. Afterwards, the offense was feeling pretty good about the passing game.
The 2008 opener is still 58 days away, but the Pam Pack is itching to get on the field and show off its new passing attack.
