Mr. Matthew Gibbs Sr., 80, of 604 Gladden St., Washington, died Monday, June 30, 2008, at his home.
A funeral service will be conducted Thursday 1 p.m. at Mount Hebron Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ) with Elder Jerome Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Gibbs Sr. was born in Hyde County, Nov. 14, 1927, to the late William Gibbs and Mary Gibbs. He attended the schools of Beaufort County.
He was the proprietor of Gibbs Grocery prior to retirement. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a member of Mount Hebron Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ).
He was married to the late Mary Jane Gibbs. Their union was blessed with four children, Matthew Gibbs, Jr. (Anita) of Laurel, Md., Gregory Gibbs of Chocowinity, Joyce Gibbs Forte (Benjamin) of Durham, Jerry Gibbs (Sylvia) of Norfolk, Va. He also leaves another daughter, Michelle Jones of Washington; seven grandchildren, one brother, Charlie Gibbs of Washington. He was preceded in death by a son, Larry Gibbs and several siblings.
The family will receive friends at the chapel today, 7-8 p.m.; other times at the home.
