Dorothy Barber Gibbs, 72, of 739 Swamp Road, Engelhard, died Tuesday evening, July 1, 2008 at her home.
Born in Lake Landing, June 4, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Samuel H. and Jean Mitchell Barber. She attended Norfolk Business College after high school and retired after 23 years of service with Hyde County Schools as a teacher’s assistant at Davis School. She was a faithful member of Engelhard Christian Church where she was a choir member, a Sunday school teacher, a Board member and active in Christian Women’s Society. She was married to Allen Forrest Gibbs and they recently celebrated their 53rd anniversary.
Funeral Services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday in Engelhard Christian Church. Pastor Scott Sukeforth and Steve Bryan will officiate. Burial will follow in Oak Cemetery.
Surviving in addition to her husband are three sons, Doug A. Gibbs of the home, Michael F. Gibbs and wife, Cynthia of Engelhard and Todd B. Gibbs and wife, Marayda of Youngsville; two daughters, Vicki Gibbs of Nags Head and Lori G. Brown and husband, Mike of Engelhard; a brother, Bill Barber and wife, Jonelle of Blounts Creek; a brother-in-law, Donnie Gibbs of Engelhard; grandchildren, Aaron Heath &Briana Heath of Nags Head, Michael Allen Gibbs and wife, Leslie of Wendell, Adria Cahoon and Bryson Cahoon; step-grandchildren, Heather Velke of Nags Head and Michael Meekins and wife, Tara of Richmond, Va; step-great-grandchildren, Hannah Meekins and Caidence Velke.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by two brothers, Samuel H. Barber, Jr. and Jack Barber.
