WILLIAMSTON — Mary Dean Griffin, 79, died September 26, 2008, at her home.
Mrs. Griffin was born on September 1, 1929, to the late Rufus and Katie Hardison of Williamston.
She graduated from Farm Life School and then earned a degree in business from King’s Business College in Raleigh, North Carolina. After an employment with the G.E. Company, Mrs. Griffin and her sister, Trula Peele, established and operated a catering service, “Griffin and Tice Catering,” which remained in business for more than forty years.
A loyal member of Piney Grove Baptist Church, Mrs. Griffin faithfully served as the church pianist for more than 50 years. She was actively involved in the Arbell Manning Circle, the W.M.U., and the church’s Relay for Life Team. Piney Grove’s outdoor drama, “The Message of Easter,” was especially dear to her heart. She was a charter member of the Farm Life Ruritanettes, having held various offices throughout her 52 years of membership.
Mrs. Griffin is survived by her husband of 57 years, James Wilford Griffin, Sr.; son, James Wilford Griffin, Jr., and wife Deborah; daughters, Mary Lane Griffin Baker, Amy Griffin Taylor and husband, Durward; grandchildren, Rachel Lane Baker, William Griffin Taylor, Colby James Griffin, and Robert Shane Griffin; sister, Trula Hardison Tice Peele and husband Bruce; brothers, William R. Hardison and wife, Crissie, and Randy L. Hardison and wife, Edie, all of Williamston.
The family will receive friends Saturday, September 27, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Piney Grove Baptist Church and other times at the home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Piney Grove “Message of Easter” or the Piney Grove Relay for Life Team, c/o Piney Grove Baptist Church, 2925 Piney Grove Church Road, Williamston, NC 27892.
The funeral service will be held Sunday, September 28, at 3:00 at Piney Grove Baptist Church with Rev. David Anderson and Rev. Jay Hardison officiating. Burial will follow at Tice’s Cemetery.
