Trimane Goddard stepped up big for the North Carolina Tar Heels.
Goddard had two interceptions, including the game-clincher late in the fourth quarter, in North Carolina’s 28-24 win over the Miami Hurricanes in Saturday’s ACC action.
The former Roanoke High School star picked off Miami’s Robert Marve in the end zone on the final play of the game to seal the deal.
Goddard also picked off Marve and returned it 35 yards earlier in the fourth quarter.
The senior safety also led the Heels with eight tackles. He also had one pass break-up in the win.
It was the second time in his career that Goddard had two interceptions in a game. The previous time also was against Miami, coming in the 2005 season.
Goddard was named the ACC Defensive Back of the Week for his play.
For the season, Goddard has 18 tackles, three interceptions and two pass break-ups. His three interceptions match his single-season high. Goddard also picked off three passes in his sophomore season.
Goddard has eight interceptions and 146 tackles in his career.
The Heels return to action Saturday at home against unbeaten Connecticut (5-0, 1-0 Big East).
Daniels scores first TD
Travis Daniels scored the first touchdown of his young college career, helping lead the UNC-Pembroke Braves to a 47-28 win over Lane on Saturday.
The freshman, a former standout at Washington High School, found the end zone on the first play of the fourth quarter. Daniels scored on a 7-yard burst.
He had his most productive game to date. Daniels carried the ball seven times and picked up 50 yards, which included a career-long 20-yard run. He also had a 26-yard kickoff return and a four-yard reception, giving him 80 total yards of offense.
For the season, Daniels has rushed for 71 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. He’s caught three passes for 36 yards and has the one kickoff return for 26 yards.
The Braves (4-1) play at Webber International on Saturday.
Wilson gets sack
C.J. Wilson, a former Northside High School star, had six tackles for No. 23 East Carolina in Saturday’s loss 41-24 loss to Houston. The junior had 1.5 tackles-for-loss, including a sack. Wilson also forced a fumble.
For the season, Wilson has 28 tackles, eight tackles-for-loss (for 30 yards), 4.5 sacks, four quarterback hurries, one forced fumble and one blocked kick.
The Pirates (3-2, 1-1 C-USA) return to action Oct. 11 at Virginia. ECU returns home Oct. 18 to face Memphis in C-USA action.
Clemmons
Jamaine Clemmons and the N.C. State Wolfpack lost 41-10 to the No. 13 South Florida Bulls on Saturday.
Clemmons, a former standout at Williamston High School, has not been credited with a tackle yet this season. The defensive end wears No. 90 for the Wolfpack.
N.C. State (2-3, 0-1 ACC) plays host to Boston College in an ACC clash on Saturday.
Marable shines again
Jeremiah Marable had seven tackles for the Elizabeth City Vikings in a 24-13 win over Saint Augustine in Saturday’s 11th Annual Down East Viking Football Classic.
The former Southside High School star also had one quarterback hurry.
On the season, Marable 32 tackles, a fumble recovery, a blocked punt, a blocked punt return that went for a touchdown and a punt return for nine yards.
The Vikings (2-3, 1-0 CIAA) play host to Virginia State on Saturday.
Rodgers, Cahoon, Coffield, Moore
Nigel Rodgers and Micke’l Cahoon helped lead the North Carolina Wesleyan Bishops to a 42-0 win over Methodist College in the USA South Conference opener on Saturday.
Rodgers, a former standout at Washington High School who started the game at defensive back, had half a tackle.
Rodgers has 11 tackles and one pass break-up on the season.
Cahoon, a former standout at Creswell High School, had 2.5 tackles-for-loss.
Cahoon has seven tackles, including 5.5 for loss, on the season.
Freshman Jarret Coffield, a former standout at Williamston High School, also saw game action for the Bishops. He went 0 for 2 from his quarterback spot.
Also, Floyd Moore, a former standout at Southside High School, got on the field for the Bishops from his linebacker spot. He did not record any tackles in the win.
Wesleyan (2-2, 1-0 USA South Conference) play at Maryville College on Saturday.
Palmer forces fumble
Greg Palmer had four tackles for the Chowan Hawks in a 51-28 loss to Virginia Union on Saturday. He also had one forced fumble.
The former Northside High School standout has 17 tackles and one forced fumble on the season.
Chowan (1-4) plays at Fayetteville State University on Saturday.
Hyman has three takedowns
Kenneth Hyman, a former standout with the Roanoke Redskins, had three tackles for the Guilford Quakers in a 35-14 loss to Hampden-Sydney in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener on Saturday.
For the season, Hyman has 15 tackles, two interceptions, two pass break-ups and four pass deflections.
The Quakers (2-2, 0-1 ODAC) play host to Southern Virginia on Friday.
Jones gets tackle
Jamont Jones had one tackle for the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears in a 40-14 win over Brevard College in the South Atlantic Conference opener on Saturday.
The former Washington Pam Pack standout, a freshman with the Bears, has one interception, three tackles and one punt return that was good for eight yards.
The Bears (3-2, 1-0 SAC) play host to Tusculum College on Saturday.
Prescott gets first assist
Freshman Blaine Prescott earned his first college assist for the Lees-McRae Bobcats, coming in a 5-0 win over Pikeville College. Her assist to Melissa Horn gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
The former Washington High School star has played in all nine games, while starting three of them.
Prescott has attempted seven shots on goal.
The Bobcats (7-2, 2-2 CVAC) play host to Warren Wilson College on Tuesday.
Crompton on Trojans
Ashley Crompton has made one appearance on the field for the Mount Olive Trojans soccer team.
Crompton, a former standout at Washington High School, has not recorded any statistics.
The Trojans (2-6, 1-2 CVAC) play host to Barton College on Wednesday.
Locals on Pitt volleyball
A few former area athletes are playing for the Pitt Community College volleyball team.
Michelle Bracey, a former standout at Williamston High School, has 52 kills, 38 blocks and 14 digs.
Lauren O’Neal, also a former standout at Williamston, has 16 kills, 20 blocks, eight digs and one ace.
Augusta Johnston, a former standout at Southside High School, has nine kills, five blocks and three digs.
Pitt (11-5, 3-2 Region X Conference) plays host to Lenoir Community College on Wednesday.
