JACKSONVILLE, NC — Charles Tayloe Hoyt Jr., 75, died Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at Onslow Memorial Hospital after a long battle with emphysema. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. James Cooke officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Church Columbarium.
Born on January 5, 1933 to the late Charles T. and Pearl Pearce Hoyt, he was raised in Washington, NC. He graduated with an A.B. Degree from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1955, where he was also a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, and then earned his Masters, M.A. and Ed.S Degree from East Carolina University. From 1955-1959 he served with the U.S. Marine Corps, as a First Lieutenant and then as a Captain.
In 1964, he moved to Onslow County to become the Director of Education and Media Services for the Onslow County School System. He taught Extension Classes in Eastern NC for ECU for 10 years and also taught summer classes on campus at ECU. He served Onslow County Schools for 38+ years, 28 years of which he was the Assistant Superintendent, as Supervisor for Purchasing, Maintenance, Transportation, Food Services and Technical Services. He planned and directed the building programs including 17 new schools and additions and renovations at 17 other schools. He diligently supported the cultural arts and athletic programs, having built or remodeled those facilities in Onslow County. He also closed the schools at Tabernacle and the old Swansboro Elementary School. He retired in 2002.
He was a member of the St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, where he served in various capacitates, including the Vestry and the Choir. He was also a member of the Jacksonville Kiwanis Club since 1968, where he held the offices of President, Treasurer and Program Chairman.
He had a lifelong interest in training American Saddlebred Show Horses. He served as an official for the Coastal Plains Horse Show Association for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Craven Hoyt; three daughters, Isabel Hoyt Mangan of Hilton Head, SC, Elizabeth Perry Hoyt Safhay of Hawley, PA and Hannah Elizabeth Fouts of Chapel Hill; grandson, Charlie A. Mangan of Hilton Head, SC; granddaughter, Natalia Edwards Fouts of Chapel Hill; and uncle, Sam N. Pearce of Washington, DC.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to the S.A.T. for Onslow County Schools, P.O. Box 233, Jacksonville, NC 28541 or to St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, 711 Henderson Drive, Jacksonville, NC 28540.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home, Jacksonville.
