Area motorcycle riders will be taking it to the streets Saturday to raise breast-cancer awareness.
J &E Harley-Davidson in Winterville will host the second-annual Breast Cancer Awareness Benefit Run. The poker run, sponsored by the Ladies of Harley and J &E Harley-Davidson, features two stops in Beaufort County.
All proceeds from the run go to the Pitt Memorial Foundation for breast-cancer screenings.
In the poker run, each participant must pull a card out of a deck of cards before starting the race at J &E Harley-Davidson. The race includes four additional sites. At each site, each participant must pull another card. At the conclusion of the race, each participant will have made a hand in five-card stud. The rider with the best hand at the end of the day wins the poker run.
The cost to race is $10 a hand. First prize for the best hand is $150, while the second-best hand gets $75.
Nonriders are welcome to participate at J &E Harley-Davidson by pulling all five cards at the host site.
Dorian Miller, a member of the Ladies of Harley, said the money will go to “people that fall through the cracks.”
The Ladies of Harley raised more than $6,000 during last year’s run, with approximately 125 riders in the race.
This year, Miller expects to raise even more money from a better turnout.
The run includes stops at Crisp RV Center in Chocowinity and Eastern Radiologists in Washington.
The first group of riders will be out of J &E Harley-Davidson at 10 a.m. The are expected to arrive at Eastern Radiology between 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., said Miller.
Miller said the stop at Eastern Radiologists is to pay tribute to the health-care company, which is associated with the Pitt Memorial Foundation through University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina.
Other local corporate sponsors of the event include Washington Jewelers, Robert’s Furniture Outlet, Edward Jones, St. Clair Trucking, Subway, Washington Women’s Care, State Farm Insurance and Fox’s Pizza Den in Chocowinity.
The Ladies of Harley are also encouraging breast-cancer survivors and cancer patients to visit J &E Harley-Davidson.
The motorcycle dealership and the Ladies of Harley will distributed prizes to the survivors and patients.
The prizes range from baseball caps and shirts to a weekend getaway in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and a full day of spa treatment.
The Ladies of Harley have invited motorcycle riders from Tarboro to participate in the poker run.
According to Miller, the Tarboro area is ranked among the highest in the nation for breast cancer-related deaths.
Miller has been touched by many cancer survivors.
