Mr. Ellis Phelps of 15521 N.C. Highway 94 North, Roper, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, at Chowan Hospital in Edenton.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in St. Mary Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Creswell, with the Rev. Samuel Fields officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Phelps was born in Washington County on March 11, 1939. He was the son of the late Otis and Mariah Leigh Phelps. He was married to Nora Meyers Rhines Phelps, who preceded him in death. He was a maintenance worker with Weyerhaeuser until his retirement. He was a member of St. Mary Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Creswell.
Survivors include one daughter, Annie Cuthrell of Plymouth; three sons, Joseph Phelps of Plymouth and Willie Phelps and Elvis Phelps; one brother, Haywood Earl Phelps of Tyner; two stepdaughters, Charlene Rhines and Rosa Rhines, both of Creswell; three stepsons, James Rhines and George Rhines, both of Roper, and Isaiah Rhines of Newport News, Va.; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; 29 stepgrandchildren and 34 stepgreat-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends today from 7-8 p.m. at Puckett-Purkett Funeral Service, Roper.
