Washington will be well represented at this weekend’s N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3A East Regional tennis tournament.
Beth Batchelor is making the trip in singles action, while the duos of Janie Page-Mary Potocki and Davey Ann Burbage-Shannon Niederhauser will compete in doubles.
Action at the Barton College tennis courts in Wilson begins at 2 p.m. today. A drawing will be held at 1 p.m. to determine the pairings.
The top four singles players and top four doubles teams advance to Saturday’s match play, which will also earn them a trip to the 3A state tournament.
The state tournament will be held Oct. 24-25 at the Burlington Parks and Recreation Tennis Center.
Burbage is the lone senior heading to today’s regional tournament. Elks, who is joined by co-coach Beth Pippin, said win or lose, the experience gained by the younger players will pay big dividends next year.
While Elks is excited about next year, she’s not ready for the 2008 season to be over with just yet.
