Lawrence Douglas Hervey, a loving husband, father and grandfather who had a long distinguished career as an educator in Maryland public schools, passed away Monday, November 3, 2008, at Grace Healthcare of Durham, N.C. Mr. Hervey and his wife, Jeanne Hervey, were the former owners of the Pamlico House bed and breakfast on East Main Street in Washington, N.C.
Mr. Hervey worked for many years as a teacher, principal and school administrator, beginning after his discharge from the Navy in spring 1946 at age 19 when he assumed the position of schoolmaster in rural southwestern Virginia. A graduate of Louisville Male High School in Louisville, Ky., Mr. Hervey earned a bachelor’s degree from Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio, in 1948, and a master’s degree in education from the University of Maryland at College Park, in 1960. He held teaching positions at several public schools prior to becoming a principal and school supervisor in Prince George’s County, Maryland. He was the first headmaster of Flint Hill School in McLean, Va. He once wrote that his philosophy of elementary education was to “maintain discipline with a minimum of supervision and correction, and to train pupils to be future citizens.”
His interests included farming, model trains, World War II history, and restoring cars, in particular Triumph convertibles. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, beginning in the 1940s.
After his retirement from public schools in the 1980s, Mr. Hervey and his wife, Jeanne, moved from Aquasco, Md., to Washington, N.C., in 1988, where they opened a bed and breakfast, The Pamlico House. They moved to Durham in 2000.
Born September 1, 1926, in Marietta, Ohio, Mr. Hervey was the son of the late John D. Hervey and Ida C. Hervey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Marshall Hervey and Cameron Hervey, and sister, Sara Hervey Watts.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanne R. Hervey of Durham, sister, Mary H. Johnston of Delmar, N.Y., daughters, Donna Tindall of Hattiesburg, Miss., Mary Clegg of Syracuse, N.Y., and Susan Martinez of Chicago, Ill.; sons, Douglas Hervey of Durham, and Philip Hervey of Warren, R.I.; granddaughters, Nicole Clegg, Amanda Tindall, Laura Martinez, Katherine Hervey, and Brynne Hervey, and grandson, Carson Hervey.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m., Friday, November 7, 2008, at First Presbyterian Church, 305 E. Main Street, Durham, N.C.
