Mr. John Smallwood Whitley, 81, of 611 N. Smithwick St., Williamston, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2008, at Craven Regional Medical Center in New Bern.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in First Christian Church with the Rev. Tom Goebel officiating.
Mr. Whitley was born in Martin County on June 22, 1927. He was the son of the late Jesse Stuart Whitley and Beatrice Benjaman Whitley. He was a Navy veteran. On Aug. 28, 1947, he married Esther Wynne Whitley, who preceded him in death July 6, 2008. He was a member of Skewarkee Lodge No. 90, A.F. &A.M. He was a member of First Christian Church.
Survivors include two sons, John D. Whitley of Ocala, Fla., and Samuel Whitley of Williamston; one sister, Elizabeth W. Roberson of Williamston; six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends today from 7-8:30 p.m. at the home of Samuel and Ashley Whitley, 24125 N.C. Highway 125, Williamston.
Memorials may be made to First Christian Church.
