Dr. Charles Albert Watson, 66, of Plymouth died unexpectedly Sunday, November 16, 2008 at his residence.
Born November 6, 1942 in Washington County he was the son of the late Garfield and Helen Robertson Watson and grandson of Charlie Fat and Hilda Bowen Robertson. Dr. Watson graduated from UNC-CH in 1966 and received his PhD in Sociology from the University of Georgia in 1972. He also held Masters degrees in Public Administration and Anthropology. He taught at Berry College in Rome, Ga., Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama, Troy University in Troy, Alabama and at Troy University Atlantic Region in Norfolk, Virginia, where he taught Public Administration on the Masters level.
He was an elder at the First Christian Church in Plymouth and taught the Adult Sunday School Class. He was a past Chairman of the Board and very supportive and active in the church and on various committees. He was the Program Chairman of the Christian Men’s Fellowship. He went to Nicaragua with the House of Hope to help build housing in 2007.
He enjoyed his grandchildren, getting together with family and friends, taking photos, working on the farm, taking care of his horses and dogs and traveling. He was an avid reader of history and politics and was working on his library on the farm. He was well known for his many dog and horse rescues. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
His family includes his wife, Frances Best Watson of Plymouth, N.C.; daughter, Elizabeth W. Rose and husband Gary of Plymouth, N.C.; son, Charles A. Watson, Jr. and wife Shelly of High Point, N.C.; grandchildren, Meganne Rose, Thomas Rose and Helen Ruth Watson.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. at First Christian Church, Plymouth with Rev. V. Tom Banks officiating. Public viewing will be held from1:30 to 2:15 p.m. at the church. Family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. Private family burial will be held following visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Christian Church Memorial Fund. Arrangements are by Maitland Memorial Chapel, Plymouth.
