Mrs. Helen Manning Newsome, 70, of Jamesville died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008, at her mother’s home.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in First Baptist Church, Plymouth with the Rev. Jimmy Hagwood officiating. Burial will follow in Jamesville Cemetery.
Mrs. Newsome was born in Martin County. She was the daughter of Lillian Holliday Manning and the late William E. “Bill” Manning. She was married to James Eley Newsome Sr., who survives. She was a retired director with The Department of Aging for Martin and Hertford counties. She was an active member of the N.C. Association of Aging, past chairman and member of Martin Community College board of trustees, past member of Roanoke Chowan Community College board of trustees, served as director of the Martin County Senior Center, past member of the N.C. General Assembly legislative study commission on gerontology, member of Roanoke-Chowan Shrinettes, Williamston Rotary Club, Jamesville Ruritan Club and Jamesville Garden Club. She established the first senior citizens center in North Carolina and received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award from Gov. James B. Hunt and was nominated for the I.E. Ready Award. She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, James E. Newsome Jr. of Manassas, Va., and Odis B. Newsome of Raleigh; one brother, Norman Manning of Charlotte and four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Plymouth and other times at the home.
Memorial donations may be made to Shriners Children’s Hospital or Jamesville Fire Department and Rescue.
Arrangements are by Maitland Memorial Chapel, Plymouth.
