Mr. Claud Jones, 81, a resident of 2025 Bay Post Office Road, Columbia, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008, at Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Malachi Chapel Free Will Baptist Church with the Revs. Robert May and Wayne Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in Azalea Memorial Gardens.
Born in Tyrrell County’s Gum Neck community Nov. 6, 1927, he was the son of the late Charles Ashby and Dora Swindell Jones. He was a member of Malachi Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was a member of Providence Lodge 678 AF&AM, Columbia Chapter 281, Order of the Eastern Star. He retired from the federal government as a soil-conservation technician.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Iris Hassell Jones; two daughters, Faye J. Starns of Elizabeth City and Vicki J. Adkins of Snow Hill; three brothers, Sam Jones of Columbia, Josh Jones of Virginia Beach and Larry Jones of Columbia; three sisters, Lillie Mae J. Cahoon and Erline J. Kemp, both of Chesapeake, Va., and Kathleen J. Spencer of Elizabeth City; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Elsie J. Spencer.

The family will receive friends at Malachi Chapel Free Will Baptist Church from 6 p.m to 8 p.m. today.
