Mr. Richard W. “Dick” Maki, 89, of 104 Morehead Drive, Washington, was called peacefully home by his Lord and Saviour on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at his home.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, November 22, 2008 at Grace Lutheran Church, Washington with The Rev. Carter S. Askren officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Mr. Maki’s grandchildren, Chris Braddy, Eric Braddy, and Jeremy Braddy, along with Drew Lautenslager, Will Gautier, and friend, Ray Manning will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, November 21, 2008 at Hillside Funeral Service and other times at his home.
Mr. Maki was born October 27, 1919 in Humboldt, Michigan and grew up in Ishpeming, Michigan. He was the son of the late Emil Maki and Lempi Kulju Maki. He was a graduate of MIT (Michigan Tech). Mr. Maki was a veteran of the US Army during WWII. On December 27, 1946, he married the former Kathryn Fernea, who survives. He was a retired project engineer with PCS Phosphate, formerly Texas Gulf Sulfur, Inc. During his career, Dick also worked at Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company and Jones and Laughlin Steel Corp in Michigan. He loved to bowl, hunt, fish, and play baseball, football and horseshoes, and enjoyed traveling. He was a charter member of Grace Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Kathryn (Cassie) Maki; his children, Richard Maki, Jr. of Mechanicsville, VA, Marilyn M. Braddy and husband, Steve of Blounts Creek, NC, Susie Bell and husband, Glenn of Chocowinity, NC, and David P. Maki of Washington, NC; six grandchildren, Christopher A. Braddy, Eric S. Braddy, Brook M. Lautenslager (Drew), Jeremy S. Braddy, Jamie B. Gautier (Will), and Jeri R. Bell; one great-grandson, Avery M. Gautier; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, John Maki, Ralph Maki, Wilho Maki, Ruth Powell, and Elmer Maki.
