Rachel Matilda Pearson Butt

Rachel Matilda Pearson Butt, widow of Alfred Watson Butt, died peacefully Thursday evening at the Presbyterian Home in Summerville, SC.
Mrs. Butt was born in Trezevant, TN, December 14, 1919, at her family homeplace, Sycamore Heights. She was the daughter of Claudius Herman Pearson and Caroline Lee Dunlap Pearson. She was a graduate of Bethel College. During the Depression, she worked as an assistant to her Congressman in Washington, DC, where she met her husband, moving with him to eastern North Carolina and subsequently to Charleston. Her life’s work, along with her husband, was devoted to the reopening and restoration of Old Saint Andrews Episcopal Church where she served in many capacities, including Sunday School teacher, president of the Women of the Church, and chairman of the tea room. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by one daughter: Annie Caroline Reid and her husband George Marion Reid of Johns Island, SC; two grandchildren: George Marion Reid, IV of Charlottesville, VA and Rachel Stanyarne Reid of Atlanta, GA.
Friends and family are invited to attend her funeral service Sunday, December 14, 2008, at two o’clock in Old Saint Andrews Church, with burial in the Churchyard.
