GREENVILLE — Brother Mervin Earl Nickels, 76, passed away Saturday, December 13, 2008.
The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Church of Christ, Church Street Ext, Winterville. Burial will follow at Pinewood Memorial Park.
Brother Nickels, a native of Montevideo, Minnesota, proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He worked as a heavy equipment operator and mechanic and taught his trade in other countries while working for CAMECO. He was called into ministry in the 1960’s in the Church of Christ. He pastored Boiling Spring Lakes Church of Christ and helped to start several congregations in eastern North Carolina.
Brother Nickels was preceded in death by his parents Murrell and Zelta Nickels, and a brother, John F. Nickels.
He is survived by his: wife of 55 years, Fern B. Nickels; daughters, Penny N. Austin of Greenville, Merle N. Spencer and husband, Charles, of Swan Quarter, and Belinda N. Smith and husband Jesse of Ridgeview, WV; son, Mervin Earl Nickels, II and wife, Marlene of Alamagorda, NM; sister, Martha Mae Langley and husband, Mike of Bernice, LA; 10 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
